Noticed that Indian stories, programming and content are all very plot centric. characters fit into their stereotypical attire, placed on a complicated plot board game.
This came up when X commented tht he knows Imitiaz Ali who made "Jab We Met"...One of his most famous films, although it was crappy
Y and i searched for words to argue, the sentiment to argue was evident on our faces
"But it was cute"
"Something different" was all that we could manage
And then I said, with a stroke of realisation "It's one of the few movies that focussed on character sketching. Even if was just the very basic; the extreme zeal for life character Kareena" (Remember the greek Zorbias?)
[another indian movie that i can think of is katha, from long ago, which very well character sketched the tortoise and the hare
but it was not popular. also the character sketching was to prove a point, not for the sake of expression
And no, we cant even dream of the white knight, dark knight, joker yet...]

from here we moved to humour, and how all American soaps humor quotient came from strong characters and sticky situations
Take friends, seinfeld, wills and grace or HIMYM as examples
whereas India is searching for humor in situations, without character sketching
Sarabhai vs Sarabhai being the only exception
But the unidimensional, simple characters got so repetitive
X went on to mention about regional humor and how awesome it was!
I thought of Tamil cinema...Not a single Tamil film exists without a parallel humor track..
the humor artists are as important as the stars
And so on, the conversation flowed to Nonsense Bengali literature, and Dylan , Baez Johnny cash and country music and kept flowing, just like the antiquity and soda!
