What 'sorry' means

He hurt me bad.I wondered and wondered why I couldn't forgive him when he said sorry .That's not me.I don't nurse wounds.I kept feeling that he hadn't meant it even though he kept saying it repeatedly. But that was not it. Then it struck me,he said it so he could assuage his guilt with my forgiveness. Not because he felt bad for what he did, or because he had felt the pain he had caused me.
