Gender equality begins at home

As I read this article, I go back to my own memories of a whiff of gender inequality that I have noticed in my normal middle class upbringing. No one overtly announced that boys were more superior to girls, but it was always lurking around in the background, mostly disguised under the cloak of 'tradition', 'culture' and 'religion'. It was always in the air, not propagated by one thing or one person. Not directed towards me in particular either. But there. Like ALL men being served food first after a ritual in a temple, before ALL women. Like a grandmother blessing her granddaughter for a 'grandson'. Like asking women to prostrate in front of their almost or to-be husbands during their wedding ceremonies. Like a mom asking her daughter (never her son) to clean up after every one was done with dinner. Like asking women to make significant changes to the way they dress up and adorn symbols after their marriage. Like asking women to let go of rights over their own bodies, restrictions on what they wear and how long their hair should be.
