Musical identity - Bollywood, anyone?

In a post i had written a long time ago, i thought abt how a certain kind of music could possibly reflect a society...carnatic music with its rigidity, and minute rules is just abt discovery of a permutation and combination within defined boundaries, just like the strict and rigid boundaries that defined our society and the high of a discovered route for reconcilation...

Jazz with its redefination of the very idea of melody is the exact opposite...
And i am somewhere in the middle...neither carnatic, and nor jazz..not there yet atleast

While in Kanpur, was listening to a few instrumentals playing in the background at the hotel i was staying...many of these english instrumentals reminded me of some hindi song or the other, so i just kept wondering, what is the core musical genre that bollywood is influenced by? i agree its fusion now, frm things all over the world...but what is its core really?
then i realised, its not indian classical music...cos classical is very unpopular, with a very strong brahminical influence...wondered wat did the masses listen to then? where is folk now? has folk formed the core influence for bollywood, or is it western and then went on to thinking if western classical was also as inaccessible and unpopular in Europe and liked by the few sophisticated elite? etc etc.
So what is the history of the guys who created bollywood music?
